SUMMARY:Drawing: The Basics - Easylink - Term 1A 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join our fabulous artist and arts tutor Christina Frank as she guides you through a wonderful creative program. Easylink participants will explore a range of techniques/materials focusing on building foundational skills in drawing to discover ways of rendering what it is you are seeing. Everyone can learn to draw so don’t be afraid to give it a go if you are a first time drawer. We will draw inspiration from simple objects\, fruit and flowers! \n \nWeek 1: Seeing the form – simple objects\nThe start of drawing is observation. We will do exercises in observation as we focus on some simple forms to draw. Using pencil we will consider concepts of tone\, light and shade and composition. \nWeek 2: Still Life with bottles and other vessels\nUsing lessons of last week we will draw a still life comprised of bottles and other vessels with symmetrical geometrical form. The use of charcoal will be introduced this week. \n \nWeek 3: A Bowl of Fruit\nA bowl of fruit will be our subject this week as we draw in charcoal and introduce the use of colour with soft pastel. \n \nWeek 4: A Vase of Flowers\nOur still life subject will be a vase of flowers which we will draw using pencil\, charcoal and soft pastel. \nWeek 5: Landscape\nOur subject this week will be landscape. We will experiment with using ink and brush\, looking at how other artists have done this. \nWeek 6: Our hands and faces\nOur subject this week is ourselves… our hands and our faces! We will choose which media to use\, or experiment with mixing media\, using all our observation skills firstly to draw our left hand\, then learning some principles of proportion\, draw a self-portrait. \n \nMaterials & Equipment List\nAll art materials supplied. \n\nApron (optional)\n\nCost\nCovered by Easylink \nTO ENROL: Call Easylink 02 9919 0700. NOTE: you will need to be over 65 years and registered with Easylink.

SUMMARY:Life Drawing - Term 1 2024
DESCRIPTION:Life drawing is a constant state of discovery and immediacy as we learn to see and feel the human form from a drawing perspective. \nArtist and tutor Christine Simpson will take you on a journey to explore the landscape of the human figure. We will consider in different sessions rhythm; form; depth; gravity; the power of the line; tonal shapes and relationships; emotional sensations; shadow-play; and the building blocks of anatomy. \nIn these life drawing sessions we are involved in the act of seeing both the energy and construction of the human form to render a sense of what is\, rather then slavishly trying to get there by copying. We are endeavouring to see creatively and not to use the thinking brain to analyse and objectify. \nThis Term we will be specifically focusing on volume and depth in our life drawing practice. \nClass dates\n\nFebruary 8th\nFebruary 22nd\nMarch 7th\nMarch 21st\nApril 4th\n\nMaterials List\n\n6B\, 2B and HB lead pencils\nGraphite stick\nWillow charcoal\nPutty erasure\nA3 drawing pad\n\nPrivacy Agreement for Online Students\nTo protect our models privacy Sydney Art Space makes it clear that online\, or indeed face to face students do not have permission to record images of the model or distribute images and that it is illegal to do so without consent\, which in this case would not be given. So that we are all on the same page there will be a form regarding model privacy sent out upon enrolment to sign before inclusion in the online classes. \nNOTE: When enrolling for a course or workshop please make sure you put the appropriate number of students enrolling in the enrolment box.

SUMMARY:Drawing Fundamentals - Term 1 2024
DESCRIPTION:Program Term 1 2024\nExhibitions of Kandinsky and Louise Bourgeois at the Art Gallery of NSW and Tacita Dean at the MCA are part of the Sydney International Art Series. We will use the work of these artists as  stimulus for developing drawing skills after starting the term with a series of still lifes. \nWEEK 1\nStill Life 1\nPencil\nTo start this term we will build the fundamentals of drawing as we do a series of Still Life drawings. The same still life arrangement will build in complexity each week. This week we will start with a few simple objects\, drawing them with pencil\, being aware of observational skills\, composing your drawing\, using shape and line and exploring the qualities of pencil. \n \nWEEK 2\nStill Life 2\nCharcoal\nWe will explore the use of charcoal as we observe and draw the still life arrangement from last week\, with additional more complex objects. We will become aware of light and shade revealing three dimensional form. \n \nWEEK 3\nStill Life 3\nInk\nThis week we will introduce ink to draw with. Our still life arrangement will be added to again with more objects. We will explore the qualities of ink\, particularly the creation of line with a brush. We will create light and shade with ink wash. \n \nWEEK 4\nKandinsky\nSoft pastel\nVasily Kandinsky was one of the first to create abstract art. To introduce colour we will attempt Kandinsky inspired abstraction\, using soft pastels to play with colour\, shape\, and line. \nWEEK 5\nLouise Bourgeois\nPencil\, charcoal\nLouise Bourgeois produced prodigious work in a wide range of media\, during her long life. We will look at some of her diverse sculptures\, using images of them to draw with pencil and charcoal. We will conclude with ‘Maman’ her giant spider sculpture! \n \nWEEK 6\nTacita Dean\nWhite on Black\nArtist Tacita Dean has drawn spectacular monumental mountain landscapes\, using white chalk on black chalkboards. We will investigate negative space as we play with drawing with white soft pastel on a black background doing individual drawings on paper\, and collaboratively creating a dramatic mountain landscape together on a black chalk board\, which we will then photograph for your own record. \nMATERIALS & EQUIPMENT LIST\n\nPencils\, a range from 2B through to 6B\nCharcoal – willow\, various thicknesses\nSoft Pastels (small set of range of colours)\nPutty Erasers and Hard Erasures\nPencil sharpener or Stanley knife\nPaper\, A3 drawing pad\nApron (optional)\nBlack ink and soft brush (no 4 size)
