Theme: Negative and Positive Space

Having good basic drawing skills is the foundation to most art disciplines and anyone can learn to draw. This class is suitable for beginners to advanced students wanting to discover their hidden drawing skills or develop their own technique further using a variety of drawing mediums. Each session will introduce the student to new drawing techniques developing essential observational skills and learning about form, tone & rendering styles using graphite, charcoal, conte, pastels, ink, & coloured pencils.

Students will be guided through various drawing techniques to improve their drawing skills, gaining more confidence as they find their self expression. The course will cover still life, landscape, plein air sketching, figurative, portrait & loose expressive drawing.

Positive and Negative space

Each week a lesson plan, with links to resources will be forwarded to the participants in the days prior to the online session. This will include any preparation required: materials, research, homework etc

Your dedicated and talented tutor, Christina Frank, will do the exercise each week with the students, by way of demonstration.

Week 1

Introduction

Look at the concept of positive and negative space in drawing and as an artist. We will touch on Rubin’s Vase and Gestalt psychology, the figure/ground distinction, and the Japanese concept of ‘ma’, as we consider the way we perceive and make sense of visual information.

We will examine examples of drawings by selected masters, analyzing their use of positive and negative space.

Introduce homework:

Each week the student will analyse the positive and negative space of a selected work by a master artist. They will print out 2 copies of the work. On the first, using a contrasting colour, highlight the positive space. On the second, do the same with negative space. Examine positive and negative space, and have fun with colour and contrast. The selected work will serve as an introduction to the next week’s theme of study.

Week 2

Composition

Balance of positive and negative space

Present homework. We will observe and discuss the selected work, and consider composition of works using a dominance of positive space, dominance of negative space and dominance of neither.

Week 3

Still life Fruit

Present homework. We will observe and discuss the selected work in its use of positive and negative space.

We will be considering the Still Life as subject and composition, playing with placement to focus at first on positive forms and then on negative shapes to render the whole composition.

Week 4

Still life Vessels

Present homework. We will observe and discuss the selected work in its use of positive and negative space.

In this session the concept of Japanese ‘ma’ will be closely observed as we arrange vessels to achieve a non-vessel spatial relationship to create the vessels themselves. We will consider the way we perceive and make sense of visual information

Homework

Week 5

Your other Hand

Present homework. We will observe and discuss the selected work in its use of positive and negative space.

Using our non drawing hand as model we will investigate negative shapes and their interrelationship with positive form to see and render your hand.
