Drawing Fundamentals
Term 4 2022

Having good basic drawing skills is the foundation to most art disciplines and anyone can learn to draw. This class is suitable for beginners to intermediate students wanting to discover their hidden drawing skills or develop their own technique further using a variety of drawing mediums. Drawing Fundamentals can now be enjoyed face to face or online.
Animals and others
This term we will begin with the animal world, concluding with ourselves in this category! We will move on to designing our own drawing project to complete the term. We will use different techniques and materials, becoming practised and explore ways of opening us to seeing. We will refer to the work of other artists as reference and inspiration for us.
WEEK 1: Animals – Pets
From David Hockney’s sausage dogs to Henri Matisse’s cats many artists have included pets in their artworks. Using pencil we will draw pet animals. Bring an image of your own if you would like to.
WEEK 2: Animals – Wild!
Taking our cue from Brett Whiteley’s ink drawings of zoo animals, using ink and brush we will draw our own selection of wild animals.
WEEK 3: Animals – Birds
We will draw birds this week using charcoal, conte and soft pastel looking at the work of Sydney artist Jody Graham.
WEEK 4: Animals – ourselves!
Using skills developed in the last weeks we will turn our attention on ourselves, drawing a self-portrait. We will think about a personal drawing project to start next week.
WEEK 5: Design your own drawing project 1
Plan a 2 week drawing project of your choice – subject matter/medium/treatment. It is an opportunity to create a considered finished artwork which is expressive of and meaningful for you. Start this week and finish next.
WEEK 6: Design your own drawing project 2
Continue our 2 week drawing project of your choice – subject matter/medium/treatment. It is an opportunity to create a considered finished artwork which is expressive of and meaningful for you. Finish this week. You may have an artwork ready to frame! Maybe to exhibit or for a Xmas gift!
