NBCS Teens Art Club

Join our fabulous artist and arts tutor Christina Frank as she guides you through a wonderful 8 week creative program. During the term students will explore a range of techniques/materials focusing on building foundational skills in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and modelling in clay whilst harnessing their own unique creative expression. We will draw inspiration from life & imaginations weaving in the seasons, nature, dreams and story. Participants will also get the chance to work on and develop their own projects from home.

Program

Week 1. Organic Vessels 1 (drawing using charcoal and graphite)

We will explore organic form by observing and drawing collected natural objects such as seed pods, cones, leaves and flowers. These drawings will be the basis for planning an ‘organic vessel’ to be made of clay next week.

Week 2. Organic Vessels 2 (drawing with charcoal, handbuilding with paper clay)

Informed and inspired by last week’s drawings we will firstly do another drawing of the intended design of your ‘organic vessel’, then get stuck into making it using rolled coil construction.

Week 3. Organic Vessels 3 (handbuilding with paper clay)

Continue and complete your ‘organic vessel’. Put aside to dry… we will be coming back to this in a few weeks!

Week 4. Chagall ‘My Story’ 1 (drawing with pencil and soft pastel)

Chagall was a prolific artist whose work is spilling over with rich colour, landscapes, people, animals, stories and dreams, all relating to his own experiences. This week we will observe some examples of Chagall’s work, select elements from these, for instance a bird or animal, and create a whimsical drawing using these. As you do this be considering a drawing of your own story for next week.

Week 5. Chagall ‘My Story’ 2 (mixed media pencil, soft pastel, watercolour, tissue paper collage)

Start an artwork telling something of your own story, combining Chagall like elements, give it the colourful, topsy turvy Chagall like treatment, building layers of mixed media: pencil, soft pastel, watercolours and collage.

Week 6. Chagall ‘My Story’ 3 (mixed media pencil, soft pastel, watercolour, collage)

Continue and finish ‘My Story’ mixed media artwork inspired by Marc Chagall’s enchanting paintings.

Week 7. Still life 1 (drawing using graphite and charcoal, painting using acrylic)

We will consider the still life tradition and explore concepts of positive and negative space as we draw a still life composition based on your own ‘organic vessel’, then use this to create a painting using acrylic paints.

Week 8. Still life 2 (acrylic paining)

Finish off the still life painting from last week.

Finish off your ‘organic vessel’ either with paint or glaze. (TBC)

Sketch book

I intend that this course supports the students own creative journey. They should each bring a small sketch book with them, to record and develop their own ideas, dream up their own projects, and practice drawing. Sometimes in the process of artmaking there is waiting time, perhaps waiting for something to dry, or to take turns in using a particular process or piece of equipment. During these times the student can be using their sketch book.
