We will draw inspiration from life & imaginations weaving in the seasons, nature, dreams and story. Participants will also get the chance to work on and develop their own projects from home.

Draw… Paint… Sculpt…

Week 1: Draw… the ocean
using charcoal… creatures of the deep

With expressive charcoal drawing we will capture the wonder and energy of creatures of the deep ocean. We will look at drawings of artists such as Seurat, to help us.

(pencil/charcoal, rubber, drawing paper, fixative)

Week 2: Draw… the ocean
using soft pastels… currents, ripples and waves

Observing and exploring the colours and patterns of water we will use soft pastels to create currents, ripples and waves of the ocean. We look at how other artists have represented water.

(pencil/charcoal, soft pastels, rubber, drawing paper, fixative)

Week 3: Draw… the ocean
using oil pastels… tropical waters

We will create a drawing with oil pastels, reflecting the vibrant colours and diverse sea life of tropical waters. We will look at Ken Done’s Barrier Reef paintings as inspiration.

(pencil, rubber, oil pastels, drawing paper)

Week 4: Paint… a garden
using watercolours… flowers and leaves

Focussing in on fine detail of flowers and leaves we will create a watercolour artwork. We will look at other artists who have done this.

(pencil, rubber, watercolour, paper for painting, soft brushes, water containers)

Week 5: Paint… a garden
using acrylics… vistas, lawns and trees

We will look at the garden as a beautiful landscape, and paint this in acrylics. We will think the Royal Botanic Gardens, and look at some artists who conjure idyllic landscapes.

Week 6: Sculpt… a group

We will dream up an idea of a sculpture which comprises a group of 3 elements. It could be anything… abstract forms, manmade or forms from nature, figurative human, animal or birds. We will consider the nature of each element and how they relate to each other and create a whole. We will sculpt one component each week using paper clay and refer to the work of other sculptors for inspiration.

(pencil. paper, paperclay, clay tools, plastic wrap, water containers)

Week 7: Sculpt… a group

Sketch book

I intend that this course supports the students own creative journey. They should each bring a small sketch book with them, to record and develop their own ideas, dream up their own projects, and practice drawing. Sometimes in the process of art making there is waiting time, perhaps waiting for something to dry, or to take turns in using a particular process or piece of equipment. During these times the student can be using their sketch book.
