Week 1
DRAWING THE HUMAN FORM
After sculptor Henry Moore
We will start the term with exercises in drawing the human form. We will draw each other, being instructed by the powerful drawings of the great English sculptor Henry Moore in understanding and conveying three dimensions in a drawing. We will play with pencil and charcoal.
Week 2
SCULPTING THE HUMAN FORM

Henry Moore created a series of abstracted sculptures of reclining figures. We will examine these sculptures, do preparatory sketches and over 2 weeks use clay to sculpt our own abstracted reclining figure.
Week 3
SCULPTING THE HUMAN FORM

Henry Moore created a series of abstracted sculptures of reclining figures. We will examine these sculptures, do preparatory sketches and over 2 weeks use clay to sculpt our own abstracted reclining figure.
Week 4
HEADS AND FACES
Familiarising ourselves with structure and proportions of the human head and face, using mirrors we will then explore our own face with drawings in preparation for next week’s project. We will use pencil, charcoal and soft pastel.
Week 5
THE SCREAM
Self portrait after EDVARD MUNCH
We will look at Edvard Munch’s iconic images of ‘The Scream’, explore what is behind it and create our own self portrait with these ideas. We will use coloured oil pastels and washes.
NOTE: Bring your laptop and phone this week as we may choose to distort images of our face using digital media.
Week 6
WILDFLOWERS
AFTER CRESSIDA CAMPBELL
We will look at the work of prodigious Australian artist Cressida Campbell, particularly her drawings and prints of Australian wildflowers. This week we will draw wildflowers using various media and use wax resist to create unique compositions.
Week 7
COLLAGE AND PAINTING: THE ARID LANDSCAPE
INSPIRED BY JEAN ARP
Starting with images of arid Australian landscapes we will discuss various plant shapes and learn about the wonderful artist Jean Arp. We will explore how Arp used cardboard cut outs of organic shapes to create dynamic artworks, investigating spatial relationships, abstraction and colour.
Note
Please supply and apron or art shirt. Particularly when we are using acrylic paints. These protect your clothes!
Sketch book
I intend that this course supports the students own creative journey. They should each bring a small sketch book with them, to record and develop their own ideas, dream up their own projects, and practice drawing. Sometimes in the process of art making there is waiting time, perhaps waiting for something to dry, or to take turns in using a particular process or piece of equipment. During these times the student can be using their sketch book.
