7 Week Program

This term we will use clay to create wearable sculptures and make artworks inspired by trees and the ocean environment.

Week 1
Something to Wear..

Make wearable sculptures using clay inspired by creatures (perhaps endangered) from the rock pools. We will start with making clay pieces experimenting with form and colour, to be turned into pendants, beads or ear rings. After firing we will finish them off later in the term ready to be worn, for yourself or as a gift.

Week 2
Trees are Wild!

We will spend 3 sessions making artworks inspired by trees. They are wild in so many ways! This week we will delve into detail, examining texture of bark and leaves, making rubbings with charcoal and graphite on paper, using these to make collaged and woven artworks.

Week 3
Trees are Wild! (cont.)
Paint a tree!

Trees can be very beautiful to look at, they can be symbols of life and growth, have a spiritual value, or we can appreciate them for useful things like shade and shelter and providing homes for birds and animals.

Which tree is your kind of tree? Choose a tree which is special to you, think about its characteristics beforehand.

For example:

  • Is it tall and straight, or bendy and willowy, or a canopy that spreads out?
  • Is it fast and hot to burn, or slow to burn?
  • Does it need lots of water or can it handle arid conditions?
  • We will start this week making an underpainting, tonal study of your tree.

Paint a tree!

We will finish off this week by making an overpainting and introducing colour to your special tree artwork. We will use leftover paint to make prints of leaves.

Week 5
Awesome oceans!
Creatures of the deep

Every winter whales make their wondrous journey up and down our coast. Using charcoal and soft pastel we will draw whales in the ocean.

Week 6
Awesome oceans!
Reefs and Rockpools

We will begin to create an acrylic painting inspired by the artist Laura Jones and her environmental artworks regarding rock pools, reefs and bleaching. Perhaps you will include a diver or snorkeller in your underwater wonderland or underwater warning! Start this week.

Week 7
Awesome oceans!
Reefs and Rockpools

We will continue to create an acrylic painting inspired by the artist Laura Jones and her environmental artworks regarding rock pools, reefs and bleaching. Perhaps you will include a diver or snorkeller in your underwater wonderland or warning! You may like to introduce thread. Complete this week.

And we will finish off the ceramic jewellery made earlier in the term if time otherwise the pieces can be taken home and painted using acrylic paint.

Note

Please supply and apron or art shirt. Particularly when we are using acrylic paints. These protect your clothes!

Sketch book

I intend that this course supports the students own creative journey. They should each bring a small sketch book with them, to record and develop their own ideas, dream up their own projects, and practice drawing. Sometimes in the process of art making there is waiting time, perhaps waiting for something to dry, or to take turns in using a particular process or piece of equipment. During these times the student can be using their sketch book.
