Program for Term 1
WILD
Join our fabulous artist and arts tutor Christina Frank as she guides you through a wonderful 8 week creative program. During the term students will explore a range of techniques/materials focusing on building foundational skills in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and modelling in clay whilst harnessing their own unique creative expression. We will draw inspiration from life & imaginations weaving in the seasons, nature, dreams and story. Participants will also get the chance to work on and develop their own projects from home.
WEEK 1
WILD LIFE – ANIMAL
INK DRAWING
Learning to draw with ink and brush, taking inspiration from Brett Whiteley’s ink drawings, and looking particularly at his animal drawings, we will make ink drawings of ‘wild’ animals of your choice.
WEEK 2
WILD LIFE – PLANT
CHARCOAL DRAWING
The world of plants is exploding with wildness. We will look at weird and wonderful plants, ones that seem more animal in their ‘behaviour’, or just look crazy. Drawing with charcoal, and introducing some soft pastel, we will make artworks inspired by wild and crazy plant life.
WEEK 3
WILD WATER
MONOPRINTING
Capturing the coolness, colour, texture and energy of wild water – the surging ocean, rushing rivers, or still lagoons and creeks – and experimenting with materials and process, we will make artworks using monoprinting.
WEEK 4
WILD FIRE
MONOPRINTING, COLLAGE , WEAVING
Looking at qualities of fire, creative and destructive, and experimenting with materials and process, we will make artworks using monoprinting.
We will use some of our prints from this week and last, fire and water, to collage and weave.
WEEK 5
WILD PATTERN / WILD COLOUR – IN NATURE
MIXED MEDIA
Observing minute details in nature, we will create abstract artworks rich in wild colour and pattern.
WEEK 6
WILD PATTERN / WILD COLOUR – PSYCHEDELIA
MIXED MEDIA
Delving into 1960/70’s graphic and wallpaper design, looking at Martin Sharp and Florence Broadhurst, we will create abstract artworks wild with psychedelic pattern and colour.
WEEK 7
WILD THING
DRAWING, CLAY
Mythological creatures
Invent your own… draw
Dragons, magical serpents, unicorns, monsters, fairies, centaurs…
Like Max in Maurice Sendak’s ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, we will invent our own imaginary creature. To help we will look at book illustrations, and images of mythological creatures in films such at The Lord of the Rings.
We will draw our Wild Thing, then start to make with clay, taking a look along the way at how Weta Workshop makes their creatures for film.
WEEK 8
WILD THING
CLAY SCULPTURE
Mythological creatures
Invent your own… make
We will finish making our ‘Wild thing’ imaginary creature.
Sketch book
I intend that this course supports the students own creative journey. They should each bring a small sketch book with them, to record and develop their own ideas, dream up their own projects, and practice drawing. Sometimes in the process of artmaking there is waiting time, perhaps waiting for something to dry, or to take turns in using a particular process or piece of equipment. During these times the student can be using their sketch book.
