Teens Art Club
Term 1 2023

Join our fabulous artist and arts tutor Christina Frank as she guides you through a wonderful creative program. During the term students will explore a range of techniques/materials focusing on building foundational skills in drawing, painting and modelling in clay whilst harnessing their own unique creative expression. We will draw inspiration from life & imaginations weaving in the seasons, nature, dreams and story. Participants will also get the chance to work on and develop their own projects from home.
Clay to use; Rainforest painting; Beach printing; Autumn watercolours
We will start the term with getting our hands into clay making things we can use. We will then draw and paint the rainforest, make prints inspired by the beach, and paint autumn fruit in watercolours.
Week 1: Clay to use – Japanese Tea cups
Using hand built pinch pot construction, we will make a series of vessels inspired by the tradition of Japanese Tea cups, experimenting with texture on the outside surface. We will decorate and glaze these later in the term.
Week 2: Clay to use – Bowl and Plate
Rolling out a ‘slab’ of clay and draping it over a mould, we will create a plate, and using coils and a mould we will make a bowl to be decorated and glazed later in the term.
Week 3: Rainforest Drawing and Painting
Delving into drawing and painting, using oil pastels, inks and acrylic paint, over 2 weeks we will create artworks inspired by exploring the rainforest
Week 4: Rainforest Drawing and Painting

Week 5: Decorating Clayware
Using underglazes we will decorate the clay vessels, platter and bowl made earlier in the term, ready for firing.*
Week 6: Beach Printing
Exploring various ways of mono printing, over 2 weeks we will produce a series of prints inspired by what can be seen at the beach, be it breaking waves, a beach towel, rock pools or seaweed.
Week 7: Beach Printing

Week 8: Autumn watercolours
To finish the term students will paint a still life of autumn fruit using watercolours.
* Firing of clay work is not done at Sydney Art Space but can be arranged to go to Brookvale Ceramics, extra cost $10 per participant
Sketch book
I intend that this course supports the students own creative journey. They should each bring a small sketch book with them, to record and develop their own ideas, dream up their own projects, and practice drawing. Sometimes in the process of art making there is waiting time, perhaps waiting for something to dry, or to take turns in using a particular process or piece of equipment. During these times the student can be using their sketch book.
