Teens Art Club
Term 1 2024
7 Week Program
This term we will learn about some famous artists who are on show here in Sydney at the moment. Exhibitions of Kandinsky and Louise Bourgeois at the Art Gallery of NSW and Tacita Dean at the MCA are part of the Sydney International Art Series. We will learn a bit about these artists and their work, responding with our own drawing, sculpting and painting.
Week 1
Kandinsky 1
Soft Pastel
Vasily Kandinsky was one of the first to create abstract art. To begin the term we will warm up using soft pastels to play with colour, shape, and line to create our own Kandinsky inspired abstract drawing.
Week 2
Kandinsky 2
Paint
Vasily Kandinsky was one of the first to create abstract art. We will continue on from last week by using paint to play with colour, shape, and line to create a Kandinsky inspired abstract painting.
Week 3
Louise Bourgeois 1
Draw, plan
Louise Bourgeois was a French American artist who in her long life worked across drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. One of her most famous works is a 9 m high sculpture of a spider. This week, using charcoal we will draw a spider, and start planning our own spider sculpture.
Week 4
Louise Bourgeois 2
Sculpt
Starting with wire we will start constructing our sculpture of a spider, inspired by Louise Bourgeois’ sculpture ‘Maman’.
Week 5
Louise Bourgeois 3
Sculpt
Introducing other materials such as fabric, thread, tissue paper we will continue constructing our sculpture of a spider, inspired by Louise Bourgeois’ sculpture ‘Maman’.
Week 6
Tacita Dean – Drawing landscape
Mountains
Artist Tacita Dean has drawn spectacular large scale mountain landscapes, using white chalk on black chalkboards. We will play with drawing with white chalk on a black background, doing individual drawings on paper, and collaboratively creating a dramatic mountain landscape together on a black chalk board, which we will then photograph for your own record.
Week 7
Painting Landscape – gouache
Bush, Trees
We will continue the landscape theme experimenting with gouache to paint a bush scene.
Note
Please supply and apron or art shirt. Particularly when we are using acrylic paints. These protect your clothes!
Sketch book
I intend that this course supports the students own creative journey. They should each bring a small sketch book with them, to record and develop their own ideas, dream up their own projects, and practice drawing. Sometimes in the process of art making there is waiting time, perhaps waiting for something to dry, or to take turns in using a particular process or piece of equipment. During these times the student can be using their sketch book.
