8 Week Program

This term we will start by looking at heads and faces…drawing, making masks with clay and creating a portrait which you may like to enter in the ‘Young Archies’ early in 2024. We will finish the year making a summer holidays artist book, using monoprints, drawing and collage.

Week 1
Drawing Heads 1

We will spend 2 weeks drawing faces and heads: closely observing, exploring proportions and viewing from various angles. Using pencil and charcoal, we will draw each other and ourselves with a bit of help from looking at Masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Picasso.

Week 2
Drawing Heads 2

We will spend 2 weeks drawing faces and heads: closely observing, exploring proportions and viewing from various angles. Using pencil and charcoal, we will draw each other and ourselves with a bit of help from looking at Masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Picasso.

Week 3
Clay Mask 1

Using what we have learned by drawing heads and faces, we will make a mask using clay.

Week 4
Clay Mask 2

Week 5
‘Young Archies’ 1

As part of the Archibald Portrait Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW, young people are invited to submit portraits to the ‘Young Archies’. Portraits are to be of someone you personally know who is important to you. Using what we have learnt in our 2D and 3D explorations of the head and face, we will create a portrait which you may like to enter in the Young Archies in 2024. We can draw, paint or mix it up.

Think about who you would like to create a portrait of.

  • Please supply and apron or art shirt. Particularly when we are using acrylic paints. These protect your clothes!

Sketch book

I intend that this course supports the students own creative journey. They should each bring a small sketch book with them, to record and develop their own ideas, dream up their own projects, and practice drawing. Sometimes in the process of art making there is waiting time, perhaps waiting for something to dry, or to take turns in using a particular process or piece of equipment. During these times the student can be using their sketch book.
